As I walked into my mother’s house tonight, I heard the words credit union howling from her television.  Of course, my head swung around to see what was being said.  It was a television commercial during the early evening news for a local credit union.  The whole thrust of the commercial was “the credit union difference.”  Unfortunately, the locally grown ad (I have nothing against that at all), did not mention any difference at all.   What it did was describe the institution’s checking account which had no differentiation from many other financial institutions.  So, there was no difference described about a credit union, no difference in the checking account. Actually it was a pretty bland commercial.  I can only imagine how much the air time cost.

If spending that kind of money, and spending it to talk about differences, spend a little more and really shout out differences of a credit union, your particular institution and your checking account.

If there are no differences you can come up with, I believe it is time for more indepth internal study.

 It will make a difference!

In a world filled with financial institutions competing for people’s money, it’s not enough just to be “different.” Like you said, what IS the credit union difference? They need to illustrate that for consumers (and make sure that difference is a competitive advantage) in order to win business.
