Big Mac

40 years of the Big Mac sandwich — which McDonalds quotes as becoming “a permanent fixture on the American landscape. McDonald’s today honored the sandwich that long ago joined baseball and apple pie as an indelible symbol of American pop-culture.”.

Jim “MJ” Delligatti, one of the earliest franchisees, invented the Big Mac in his Pennsylvania restaurant and introduced it for 45 cents in 1967. It joined the national menu the next year.

Keith Reinhard, Chairman Emeritus of DDB Worldwide, and his  group at Needham Harper & Steers developed the famous Big Mac advertising promotion, “Twoallbeefpattiesspecialsaucelettucecheesepicklesonionsonasesameseedbun” in 1974.   The famed statement reached stardom when Max Cooper of Alabama, a McDonald’s franchisee, developed a “man-on-the-street” promotion asking customers on the street to  repeat the statement correctly in four seconds or less.  They were rewarded a free Big Mac. Those who couldn’t ended up in a local radio commercial  broadcasting the jingle “bloopers.”

 We all know what happened after that.  While I am not a fan of the Big Mac mostly for nutritional reasons, I am a fan of two facts, that the franchisees ideas went to national stardom; and that the promotion of the four second statement was simple, fun and engaging of the consumer.
