Wonder no more

June 26, 2007 at 4:13 pm

Four hour meetings usually do not interest me. I get too bored and edgy sitting for so long. On the other hand, sitting in a four hour meeting listening to someone who can say it and be so right in such a powerful way, can get my full attention.

That is what happened at our 4 hour feedback session on our internal well being on June 4. If you recall, we began our internal branding after our complete branding process this past winter https://shoutcu.wordpress.com/2007/05/30/wondering-more/ . Our outside brand consultant recommended after our initial branding phase that we should bring someone in who specialized in the types of human resource help it appeared that we could benefit from utilizing. We did just that and chose one of the most expert professional firms I have ever dealt with in my career.

That evening findings were presented utilizing a hard copy report we all were able to keep. It compared our scores to national levels of competence. Earlier in the process each employee received their own individualized report which also compared competence. The testing has measured five different categories of behavior.

1. Management knowledge – theoretical understanding of effective interpersonal relationships in the workplace

2. Seven personality characteristics – Energy level, dominance, decision making, reflectiveness, social skills, stability, delegation

3. Six Power Bases – Communication, good will, expertise, authority, reward, discipline

4. Five conflict modalities – Compromise, competing, accommodation, collaboration, avoidance.

5. Mental Maturity – the ability to process complex information and a person’s problem solving ability.

Then the discussion began.

The 320 minute feedback session first included a summation of the entire staff’s scores on our Performance Dynamics testing, https://shoutcu.wordpress.com/2007/05/24/wondering/. Concerns from the scores were presented to the employees. As employees listened I wondered whether they would engage in the conversation when the opportunity presented itself. I did not have to wonder long; and I really shouldn’t have wondered at all. The staff here is very close and supportive of each other. Management should feel fortunate.

The conversation about our internal well-being that ensued was amazing; those who I thought wouldn’t talk, talked. The comments that were made were honest. The feedback to employees was fascinating; their response very credible.

According to my results of the testing, Giombetti Associates provided an accurate account of who I am professionally. There were no surprises to me, only validation and areas where that I could pay more attention to, which I will, thank you Mr. Giombetti. Others concurred about their scores. Cumulatively, our scores were very instructive about where VSCU needs to go next internally. The very knowledgeable and expert Mr. Giombetti was very direct. Good for him. I admire that in another professional.

I will repeat this from a previous post – you can do all the public relations work you want to make your credit union look good, and you can spend all of the money you have on marketing to get business, but truly, and listen to this loudly – it is a total waste of money unless you can pay it off internally!
