The Lawn

Saturday we will be doing work on the lawn. It is our third annual ValleyStone Credit Union ‘Loans on the Lawn’ party, yes, outside on our front lawn. It has all the elements of a yard party – great food, our barbecue caterer is the best; entertainment, Tootsie the Clown; music, my iPod and a speaker system about five inches in length; prizes, original wiffle ball bats and balls from Wiffle Ball, Inc. for the first 50 people to attend, and the grand prize, a gas grille; of course, loan specials on home equities and mortgages; a home buying seminar and a new addition this year, ProShred.

Proshred is a local document shredding company who will be bringing their large mobile shredding truck that will shred confidential documents for anyone. The truck allows viewing through windows of your documents actually being shredded. We will charge $5. per copy paper size box; the money will all go to a local charity, Rick’s Place. I am promoting the shredding through the press as a charity event, and also an ID Theft preventative.

So much happening on the lawn that day. So many details to be attentive to. But, I can’t sweat the small stuff. The town of Wilbraham is somewhat detailed. We need permits for the banners we will hang, permits for the tents we will have up including their non-flameabilty makeup; permits that talk about how the food will be cooked, where the fire extinguishers will be and how clean everything will be kept.

I have to decide whether to hire the police officer we usually bring in to direct traffic. Last year this didn’t prevent the accident that did happen as one young driver was looking at the antique sports cars we had parked in front, instead of the beautiful red car that was driving in front of him.

Next is meeting with the staff this week who will be working on the ‘Lawn’ to talk about the dress code for the day, greeting people, handing out prizes and giveaways, selling our new VSCU tee shirts for charity and on and on, and also ask someone to help at the shredding truck.

I have to tape off the front parking lot so no one drives into the barbecue, or the antique cars, or Tootsie. The community room needs to be set for the seminar, and bags made from us to give to each attendee.

Ads have run, direct mail has been sent out, and two press releases have gone to the local media.

And, then there is so much more. Details are fun; they keep us in line; somewhat.

I am not going to look at the weather until Friday late day. I don’t want to worry because we are in New England, and predictions are just predictions until the weather happens.
