The Beginning
March 11, 2007
Thanks to Larri Cochran for the blogging seminar she presented in January along with our visits with Max that got me even thinking I could do this. And thanks to all those wonderful credit union friends for their support. Ready, here we go!
Working in the credit union community now for 2 and exactly ¼ years, and coming from about twenty years of public relations experience, I have continued to recognize this industry seems be ‘whispering’. Being this silent is sometimes intentional. But I really don’t believe that this is the reason. Historically, it seems we didn’t have to ‘tout’. It was self-sufficient, a self-communicative field, everyone that need to talk to each other did, and seemed to be okay with that. We still are like that.
But with the advancement of credit unions largely joining the ranks of serving the community, not just employer groups, community associations, or geographical territories, this field needs to explore its self-communicative state and advance into a more sophisticated state of ‘touting’. And with the advancement of being in the community and competing for market share with banks who are so heavily going towards community mind share with so many of its almighty dollars being tossed around into advertising and wonderful worthy causes; and as most credit unions don’t have that ability, we must discover and implement those ways to tell the wonderful things we do for members, our mission and our community commitment which we have performed, silently, for so many years. So it is with these words that I will name this blog about public relations, ‘shout.’ Credit unions shall never be silent again!
